The Performativities and Aesthetics of Religion (PAR)

The primary goal of this multi- and interdisciplinary line of research is to study, understand and describe the aesthetic and performative forms, both verbal and nonverbal, through which religion manifests itself and is culturally transmitted. Expressions of religion/religiosity/religious belief produce multiple effects in the individual, bringing about a variety of transformations and inspiring different forms of knowledge, whether intellectual, performative or sensory. Based on this supposition, this research line will analyse the capacity of religion/religiosity/religious belief to stimulate and influence particular cognitive and sensory processes. Our aim is to achieve a concrete understanding of how religion/religiosity/religious belief is transmitted or conveyed through language and by nonverbal means, how these messages are received by the body through the senses and how they it reach or affect religious (and/or nonreligious) actors in different individual and socio-cultural contexts. The aesthetic and performative configurations through which religion/religiosity/religious belief is transmitted and the effects they produce will be examined, on one hand, in relation to their institutionalised ritualistic forms, and, on the other, in regard to their more individual manifestations as they emerge in literary and artistic creations. Focusing mainly on the 20th century and contemporary society, the PAR research line seeks to rethink critically the ambiguous and supposedly confrontational relationship between religion and modernity. In terms of its epistemological framework, the PAR line involves researchers from a wide range of academic fields, including theology, religious studies, literature, culture and art studies, sociology, anthropology and the history of art.
